Dutch, 1838-1888 Dutch painter. He came from a large family of clergymen in the province of North Holland. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to the animal painter Pieter Frederik van Os (1808-92): animals (especially sheep, but also cows and horses) became Mauve's preferred theme. (Januar 1846 in Döhlau bei Hof (Oberfranken); 8. Oktober 1937 in Ansbach) war ein deutscher Maler. Alt war der Sohn des Döhlauer Pastors Heinrich Alt und dessen Ehefrau Justina Ziegler. Nach erstem Unterricht durch seinen Vater besuchte Alt die Lateinschule in Regensburg, wo sein Vater von 1856 bis 1870 der evangelischen Gemeinde vorstand. 1861 wechselte er an die Kunstgewerbeschule N??rnberg, wo er als Schuler von Hans Ringlein bis 1863 blieb. Im Spatsommer desselben Jahres wechselte Alt mit Empfehlung seiner Lehrer an die Kunstakademie in M??nchen. Dort wurde er zuerst Sch??ler von Hermann Ansch??tz und in den Jahren 1866 bis 1873 bei Arthur von Ramberg.

French Pointillist Painter, 1858-1941 French painter and printmaker. He was born and brought up in the working-class surroundings of Montparnasse, and an interest in the daily routines and labours of the petit peuple of Paris informs much of his art. After an apprenticeship with the wood-engraver Henri Theophile Hildebrand (b 1824), in 1876 he entered the studio of the wood-engraver Eugene Froment where he assisted in the production of engravings for various French and foreign publications such as L'Illustration and The Graphic. He also sporadically attended classes at the Academie Suisse and in the studio of Carolus-Duran. In Froment's studio he came into contact with the artists Leo Gausson and Emile-Gustave Peduzzi
